Tabs to Android in Discord!

Users of Discord can expect exciting updates and enhancements to the Discord Android application beginning on August 1, 2022. These updates will include:

  • Consistent Features Across All Platforms: By utilizing a centralized and streamlined app development process, Discord aims to maintain a consistent set of features across PC, iOS, and Android.
  • Accelerated Update Cycles: A more centralized procedure will result in faster app update release cycles, enabling the introduction of new features and the correction of annoying bugs more swiftly.

In an effort to provide an enhanced overall experience for Android users, the migration to the React Native framework will begin in the coming weeks. To use the updated version of the Discord app, follow these steps:

  • Manually Upgrade: Visit the Google Play Store to manually upgrade your Discord app.
  • Automatic Updates: If auto-update is enabled on your Android device, the app will update automatically.

For more information on these changes, check out our detailed post on our blog. Ensure you have the most recent version of your Android app from the Google Play Store before September 1, 2022, as the previous Discord Android app will cease to function after this date.

We are excited to announce that we will begin rolling out the latest version of the Discord app (version 20) to our Android users starting today. This version features a new, streamlined experience, making it easier to navigate the app.

Get To Your Conversations Faster

Navigating the New Tabs on Discord

Before diving into the actual tabs, let’s talk about how to navigate the new interface. One of the first things you’ll notice is that we’ve replaced the drawer with sliding panels. This change enables smoother and more intuitive motions:

  • Swipe Navigation: Simply swipe your finger across the screen in either direction to navigate to the next panel. This method is much easier on the thumbs compared to reaching for the edge of the screen to open a drawer.
  • Stay in Your Conversation: You no longer need to leave your current conversation to check out a new activity. This update allows you to spend less time navigating and more time engaging with others.

Improved Access to Features on Discord

Following the navigation update, you’ll notice the new bottom tabs. We aimed to showcase key functionalities in a way that’s more suitable for mobile devices:

  • Home Tab: Since Discord is where friends and communities gather, we placed the primary Home tab in the most prominent position. This is where you’ll find your servers and DMs.

  • Friends Tab: Recognizing the value of screen space on mobile devices, the addition of tabs prevents the Friends page from getting buried in the Direct Messages list. Previously, accepting a friend request required multiple steps (opening the drawer, tapping the home button, tapping friends, tapping the “Pending” tab, and finally tapping accept). Now, it only takes three steps thanks to the new tabs and enhancements. Plus, the Friends tab can have its own notification badges to ensure you never miss a new request.

  • Quick Switcher and Recent Mentions: Designed for users who participate in many communities, the Quick Switcher and Recent Mentions features simplify browsing and locating relevant messages. During trials, giving each of these functions their own area nearly doubled the usage of the Quick Switcher! Stay tuned for more enhancements to these features in the near future.

  • User Settings: Located to the right of the tab displaying your avatar and status, the User Settings tab gives you access to your personal settings. Are you an expert in using custom statuses? No worries, you can still modify them directly from the tabs view by holding down the long-press button on the User Settings tab.

The Future

Final Thoughts on the New Tabs

Last but not least, tabs provide us with the flexibility to continue investing in ways to make Discord more beneficial to our users. For example, millions of desktop users have utilized server discovery to find communities relevant to their interests. With tabs, we now have solutions to provide a more effective method for discovering new servers on mobile without cluttering the app.

As always, we are continuously looking for ways to improve. Please let us know if you have any comments or suggestions!
