Go Live and Screen Share in Discord

You can share the screen of any programme window or your complete screen when on a voice call or server with the use of Go Live and Screen Sharing.

This post will cover Go Live – Screen Sharing on the desktop client, which may be used in direct messages and voice channels. Check out our page on Video Calls for more information on how to initiate a video call. Please read our Frequently Asked Questions article [Mobile] Screen Sharing if you have any inquiries regarding screen sharing on a mobile device.

Step By Step Instructions

If you want to show the rest of the people in the Discord server what’s on your screen while using Go Live:

  1. Join a voice channel in the server you are using.
  2. A new window will appear whenever you press the Screen streaming icon that is located in the voice status panel towards the bottom left corner of the screen.
  3. Choose to share either a single application window or the entire screen by clicking the appropriate option.
  4. When you are ready to share your stream with others, you can do so by clicking the “Go Live” button located at the bottom of the window.

If you want to join the server and watch a Go Live stream there, the following steps need to be taken:

  1. Check the left-hand sidebar for any broadcasters within the voice channel that have the Go Live icon.
  2. Simply choose the username of the person whose profile features a Go Live icon to automatically join the stream.
  3. After you have joined, you will have the ability to modify the size and position of your viewing window, as well as the audio settings for the broadcast by clicking the volume icon while you are hovering over it.

How Do I Screen Share With Go Live in Discord?

Join a voice channel on your server to begin sharing your screen with other people. When you have successfully joined the voice channel, the Go Live button will become available to you on the voice status panel.

Now, a panel will appear from which you can select an individual application window to share (under the “Applications” option), or you may choose to share your full screen. You can also choose not to share any windows at all (by selecting the “Screens” option).

After you have determined which screen you want to broadcast, choose it by pressing the Go Live button, and then begin sharing!

You are able to switch the screen that is being shared by selecting Screen and then Change Windows. This is useful in the event that you change your mind about the screen you would like to share.

Note: Audio can be shared between computers running Windows 10 or later versions of MacOS (10.13 or later) when an application window is shared. You may enable audio sharing on MacOS by following the instructions in this guide here.
– Linux does not, sadly, support the exchange of audio files across users.

How Do I Share My Game in Discord?

To share your game, it must first be identified as a game by our in-house game detection technology. Once you have started the game you want to share, navigate to a Discord server, look for a Go Live panel on the bottom left of your screen, and then click the “Stream” button that is located above your status bar.

Note: In the event that the game does not appear, you can manually add your game by navigating to User Settings > Game Activity > Add it!

You will not be able to broadcast the game if Game Detection or the procedure of manually adding it does not detect your game. In this unfortunate case, you will not be able to play the game either.

Following your selection of the Stream button, a window will appear from which you can choose the available voice channels. After you have selected the voice channel that you want to use, you may share your game by pressing the Go Live button.

You should see a little window called a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) that displays the game you are sharing so that you may get an idea of how it appears. When you move your mouse pointer over the PiP, you will see choices that allow you to change the stream’s parameters or end the stream.

Note: Once you have the game in the foreground of your attention, the PiP window will pause by itself.

Sharing Your Game Using Overlay

In addition to that, the ability to share your game has been added to our Overlay!

To share your game with others, first toggle the Overlay hotkey while you are playing a game, and then proceed with the instructions outlined in the section titled “How do I share my game?”

The Overlay widget is where all of the settings can be found and accessed. You’ll be able to make changes to your stream settings, pause or stop the stream, and view a list of viewers from this screen.

You will be able to tell when someone is watching your stream by the small eyeball icon that appears next to their name in the Overlay Widget.

How Do I Share My Screen In A Direct Message in Discord?

You will need to initiate a call before you can share your screen in a Direct Message (DM), so keep that in mind. When you are viewing a direct message, you can do this by pressing the phone or video symbol that is located in the top header.

After the call has been initiated, navigate to the call panel and press the button labelled Share Your Screen.

After that, a menu will appear, from which you may select a specific application window to share (under the “Applications” option), or you can choose to share the entirety of your screen instead (by selecting the “Screens” option).

After you have determined which screen you want to broadcast, choose it by pressing the Go Live button, and then begin sharing!

If you want to switch from one programme window to another, all you have to do is click the “Change Window” option to make the switch happen quickly and easily!

When you are finished watching the stream, all you have to do to stop it is pick the “Stop Streaming” option.

Stream Quality Settings in Discord?

Adjustments can be made to your stream’s framerate as well as its resolution in a number of different areas.

You can alter the quality of your stream at any time by clicking the “Screen” button that is located above your status bar. This option is available regardless of whether you are sharing your screen in a Direct Message or in a server voice channel.

720p video at 30 frames per second can be streamed by any user.

Those who have subscribed to Nitro Classic have access to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Moreover, customers to Nitro have access to resolutions as high as 4k at 60 frames per second.

Stream Quality Settings For Go Live in Discord:

While you are sharing your screen on a server voice channel, you have the ability to adjust the Stream Quality by selecting the gear icon that appears when you hover your mouse pointer over the PiP window of your stream.

Stream Quality Settings For Direct Messages in Discord

By selecting the screen sharing drop-down arrow in the call panel, you will have the ability to instantly alter your Stream Quality, including changing the frame rate and resolution of your broadcast. This will be possible immediately within the call panel.

VIEW MODES In discord

Grid View –

  • This view will serve as the starting point for all calls! This mode is ideal for viewing all of the videos and screenshares contained within your conversation at the same time.

Focus View –

  • You can then use this perspective to make the person you’re concentrating on the most visible on the screen by making their screen the focal point of the attention! The screen that is now being focused on will appear to be the largest screen, while the screens of everyone else will appear to be smaller screens at the bottom.

Want to make that focused view even larger?

  • While in the Focus View, you have the option to hide the streams of the other Server Video Members (by hitting the button labelled “Hide Members” within the stream that is currently being focused on). This will allow you to display only the main screen that you are currently concentrating on. This way, you won’t be able to become sidetracked by the screen of anyone else!

Want to change which screen you want to focus on?

  • You can change the screen that you are concentrating on by pressing the Show Members button, which will display all of the additional streams one more time, and then selecting the screen of the other person!

WINDOW MODES in Discord

Pop Out View –

  • Pressing the button labelled “Pop Out View” will cause the video conversation to load in its entirety in a new window that may be moved independently of the other windows on your screen.
  • You can utilise the Remain On Top button if you want the Pop Out window to remain on top of all other windows even after you minimise or close them. Use the button labelled Remove from Top to unpin the window.

Full-Screen View –

  • If you want the movie to take up as much space as possible on your screen, make sure to hit the “Full Screen” button at the end of the process.

Audio Sharing in Discord

Note: At this time, only the Windows desktop client, the MacOS desktop client, the Chrome browser, and the mobile clients are able to record audio. You will not be able to share the audio from your application with other browsers or Linux.

Go Live: Permissions

The “Video” permission is required in order to make use of the channel’s Screen Sharing functionality. You can manually alter these permissions if you are the owner of the server or have Administrator credentials. This allows you to offer select server users the ability to stream!

1) For a Specific Role –

You can allow the “Video” permission for particular roles within the server by navigating to the Server Options menu, clicking on the Roles tab, and then selecting the appropriate role.

After you have decided on the particular Role to whom you would like to provide permission, scroll down the list of permissions until you reach Voice Permissions, and then enable “Video” there!

or

2) For a Specific Channel

  • You also can modify these permissions on the channel level by right-clicking the voice channel you want to edit, selecting Edit Channel from the menu, and then selecting Permissions from the submenu that appears (right underneath Overview in the left sidebar).
  • After that, you can add a server member or a Role to the server by pressing the + symbol that is located next to the Roles/Member section. After that, you can select the individual to whom you would like to grant authority.
  • Next, allow “Video” by scrolling down the permissions list until you reach the section labelled “Voice Permissions.”

Under the Server Settings tab, the Go Live authorization is displayed as follows:

Note: Sharing your screen while participating in a voice conversation is enabled automatically in most instances.

How Do I Watch A Stream?

There is a good chance that you have noticed a badge that says “Go Live” to the right of your friend’s login.

If the person is streaming, as shown by the badge, you will have the opportunity to view the stream if you click on their username within the voice channel.

Note: If all you want to do is talk, you may just join a voice channel like you normally would without actually watching the stream if there is one available. In addition, Go Live streaming are limited to a maximum of fifty viewers at the same time (that’s fifty viewers plus the broadcaster!).

When you click the “Join Stream” button, you will immediately be added to the voice channel, and you will be able to watch the stream in a new window.

You can also double-click the play button to watch the stream in full-screen mode, and then press the Esc key to bring it back down to window size.

The audio of the broadcast can also be controlled by clicking the volume button that appears when you hover over the feed.

If you click on any other text channel, the stream will be shrunk down to a little window within the app. Feel free to reposition the stream window wherever you like within the program with the drag-and-drop functionality!

Note: If you join another voice channel, you will be kicked out of the Go Live session, and the feed will be deleted. You are only able to view a single stream at a time within a single voice channel.

Go Live: Pop Out

In addition, we have incorporated a “Pop Out” option for your browsing convenience! You’ll have the ability to watch the stream in a new window thanks to a feature called “Pop Out”!

It will look somewhat like this when the “Pop Out” symbol is used:

You are free to adjust the size of the window that says “Pop Out” whatever you like!

You can utilise the button labelled “Stay On Top” if you wish the “Pop Out” window to remain on top of all other windows even after it has been minimised. Use the button labelled Remove from Top to unpin the window.

And That’s It!
