How to make Group Chat and Calls in Discord

You can summon and start group messages totally without the use of a server if you make use of Discord’s Friends List. You’ve tried to join a server, pass out invites, and participate in voice channels, but you just can’t seem to get the hang of it, have you? The situation can now be salvaged thanks to group phone calls. Let’s split it down into its parts here:

1. Add Friends, Mix Thoroughly

Your friend’s list is where all of the beginnings of group calling and group chats are stored. The first thing that needs to be done is to add your pals to your friends list. As soon as you have that aspect under control, pull up your friends list, and have a look at the new group DM button:

friends list new button

After clicking the button, a window will appear listing all of the people on your friend’s list who can be added to the newly created group direct message (DM). You can search for your favorite friends by typing their names into the search box, or you can scroll through the list to discover them.

Keep in mind that the number of participants in group direct messages is capped at 10. Simply create a server if you want to celebrate with more than 10 of your close friends at the same time.

Pro Tip:

You can also start a Direct Message conversation with a buddy, and then click the box labeled “Add Friends to DM.” This will ensure that your prior DM is preserved, but it will also kick off a new group DM that includes you, the friend I mentioned earlier, and anybody else you choose to include.

That’s all there is to it! Now that you have your friends arranged the way you want them, we can delve a little deeper and investigate the other capabilities that group direct messages have to offer.

2. Ch-ch-ch-check It Out:

A good many of the capabilities that you are familiar with and like using in server text channels are also available in group direct messages. You won’t have to worry about handling invites or roles when you’re chatting with your friends because all you have to do is add your friends and start playing. To push your group’s DM into maximum EFFORT OVERDRIVE, there are a couple of cool techniques and methods, so let’s start with the menu bar:

A. Call button:

If you click on this icon, the group DM will immediately begin a call with you and each of the other members of the group. You can also join a call that is already in progress by pressing this button, which allows any member of the group to start a call at any time and allows you to join a call that is already in progress.

Starting a call will summon all other members who are currently in the group chat; but, in order for them to participate, they will need to click the “Join Call” button first. When you are in a call, you will see avatars pop up for anybody who is joining.

In a moment, we will delve deeper into the group call function that is available.

B. Mute Notifications:

When you click on this icon, the alerts for the group’s direct message will be muted. If you mute a DM, however, that functionality will be disabled, and you’ll be responsible for ensuring that you don’t miss any important updates. Normal direct messages (including Group DMs) typically send desktop notifications. Excellent for talks that involve a lot of small talk or participants from several time zones, as well as for times when you need to buckle down and concentrate on something else.

Pro Tip:

You have the option in your User Settings > Notifications tab to silence the noises associated with incoming and outgoing call activity.

C. Pin Messages:

pin(bar)_

You can use the pin feature in the same way as normal pinned messages on servers by right-clicking on the message you want to pin and selecting the “pin” option from the menu that appears, or you can click the three dots to the far right of the chat window and select the “pin” option from the menu that appears.

When you view the window by clicking on the icon, you will see any pinned messages that have been saved. You are able to reveal them to your friends by either unpinning them or clicking the “jump” symbol, which will take you directly to the point in chat where they were. Strongly suggested as an option.

D. Member List:

This icon’s only function is to display or conceal the user list of people who are currently in the direct message. Show to remember who’s here and view profiles and direct messages sent by participants of the group chat; hide to maximize the amount of available conversation space.

E. Add Users:

adduser_

You can make use of this button to add users to the group DM that you are currently a part of if you so desire. When you establish a one-on-one direct message, you will also be presented with the “Choose Friends” prompt. Everyone who is already part of the DM can add users up to the limit.

At long last, you’ve arrived at the icons for recent mentions and support articles. Even though they are not particularly pertinent to DMs, they are nevertheless useful in their own right.

3. Not-so-Odds and Ends of Group DMS

Yeah, but we’ve only just begun the festivities! There are a few additional crucial attributes that DMs in general should pay attention to, in addition to the action icons that are located in the top menu.

F. Kicking DM members:

Although anyone can add users to a group direct message (DM), only the person who started the DM can remove members. Right-clicking a user’s name allows you to remove that person from the group; if you are the pioneer who started it all, you will get this option:

G. Customizing the DM:

You will have the opportunity to edit or remove the DM icon if you right-click the DM title in your DM list.

leave group _

You also can rename the group’s DM by clicking on the title of the DM that is located at the very top of the client window.

You can copy and paste text using the right-click menu, peek a user’s profile, mention them, mute them, add a note to your conversation with them, or modify their volume by right-clicking their user avatar. These features are similar to those found in conventional server text channels. It’s a tonne of fun.

4. The Good Stuff: Group Calls (And Private Calls Too!)

I am fully aware of the purpose of your gathering here today. Because the functionality of Group Calls and Private Calls (1:1 calls, direct calls, or anything else you choose to name them) is rather distinct from one another, we will divide this guide into two distinct parts.

H. Group Calls:

As was discussed before, initiating a call with many people is a rather straightforward process. To call anyone in the group, simply open the direct message for the selected group (or continue with the instructions from the previous section) and click the call icon.

After your friends have joined the call, you will notice that their avatars will stop flashing and begin lighting up with a green circle to indicate that they are speaking. If anyone else chooses to silence (or deafen) themself in Discord, you will also notice a convenient mute or deafen icon appearing in the chat window.

In addition, calls can be joined or left at any point during their duration. As long as at least one person is participating in a call, the others in the group are welcome to do so as well.

Pro Tip:

There is a big red button that says “leave call,” but if you want to witness the results of our hard work, click the same call button that is located in the top menu bar. Check out this cool animation that morphs between different shapes!

Despite the mayhem that occurs during group calls, you are still able to type and send emojis in the associated group chat.

But who exactly is the nerd in this group?

I. Private Calls:

Okay, but if you want to call your pals, you don’t need to have a group DM! That same call button that we saw at when we were on the group DM screen, right? It is also possible to locate it in a certain DM all by itself.

INDIVIDCALL

This will initiate a one-on-one call between the two of you in complete privacy. Mano e mano. Because there is only one exit from this town, the two of us can’t stay here. To di- err.. Simply press the button labeled “hang up.”

If you don’t already have a direct message conversation going with the person you wish to contact, or if you don’t want to start one, you can find a call button for that user by hovering over their name in your user list:

call from friends_

And it concludes all group direct messages, calls, and everything else linked with them. Even though we covered the fundamental techniques to navigate your way through group calls, the list of procedures that we have provided here is not exhaustive. We have included many of the same steps in many right-click choices so that you can choose the method that is most convenient for you in any combination of steps!
