How to Make Discord Video Calls on Desktop and Mobile
What Are Video Calls?
You can make video calls from within the Direct Messages (DMs) or server voice channels that you would normally hang out together in. This makes it a simple and convenient method to keep in touch with one another.
You will be able to begin conversing with one another through video immediately after entering a voice channel or direct message.
Throughout the course of a video chat, you are able to:
- video chat only,
- screen share only,
- video chat and screen share at the same time, or
- do neither and just chat on voice and watch others’ videos!
This article will discuss video calls in direct messages (DMs) as well as voice channels available on the desktop client. Check out our post on “Go Live – Screenshare” for further details on how to share the screen that you are currently viewing. If you have questions concerning video calls on a mobile device , consult our [Mobile] Video Calls article.
Setting Up Your Camera In Discord
You can check your video settings before you start your call or join a voice channel by selecting the gear icon in the bottom left corner to visit your User Settings page. This will allow you to see your video settings.
You will next come across a convenient menu labelled “Voice & Video,” on which you may make changes to your settings for voice and video chat respectively.
As long as you have a video device at your disposal, you will be able to select it from the dropdown menu that is located next to the camera:
You may use the convenient “Test Video” button to perform a final check on your video before beginning a call. This allows you to ensure that everything is in working order and that your hair is styled appropriately before making initial contact with your pals.
Note: It is possible that in order to utilise the device correctly, users of browser apps will be required to permit camera access within their browsers. You only need to make sure that the “Allow” button is selected in the permissions pop-up for this to work properly.
Starting A Video Call In A Direct Message
Step 1: Open a DM
In order to initiate a video conference with a buddy, you will need to make sure that you are viewing a direct message (DM) that you have already initiated. When you select the Home button (the Discord logo) in the top left corner of the app, all of your direct messages will be displayed to the right of your server list under the heading “Direct Messages.” After that, choose a DM to assist you.
Step 2: Start a Video Call
You can make a video call in a direct message by pressing the Start Video Call button that is located on the menu bar at the very top of the screen. This is only necessary if your camera is already set up and ready to go.
You have the option of initiating a voice call rather than sharing video right away by clicking the Start Voice Call button; you can then turn on your camera from within the call itself at a later time.
Enabling Video
You can start a video call even if you’re already in the middle of a voice call by pressing the video symbol (png). To use the camera, use the button located in the call panel.
If at any time you wish to stop streaming video, all you have to do is hit the camera button once more to activate the “Turn off Camera” option.
Advanced In-Call Options
You will be able to adjust the following settings by selecting the image5.png (arrow) icon that is located next to each of the call panel menu buttons. The options are as follows:
- Which camera are you shooting with?
- You can directly change your input and output device while the call is in progress.
- Ability to switch between Voice Activity and Push to Speak in a flash
- Whenever you are finished making adjustments, you should immediately return to the call you were in after opening the Voice Options menu.
How Do You Join A Video Chat In A Server?
This section will first discuss how to enable permissions to join a video call, and then it will guide you through the steps necessary to activate the call itself within the server.
What Role Permissions Do You Need?
Before you can even begin the process of joining a voice channel, you will need to ensure that you have a position that allows you to broadcast video and has the Video permission enabled.
If you are the owner of the server and want to ensure that your friends will also be allowed to share their streams, you will have the ability to adjust these permissions by going into your Server Settings and then selecting the Roles tab.
When you get there, scroll down to the section labelled “Voice Permission,” and you’ll see that you have the option to change the permissions associated with each role individually.
Note: If you are the owner of the server, you are exempt from this requirement because you already have complete control over your server’s rights.
How Many People Can Join In A Server Video Chat?
At the moment, a maximum of 25 users from the server can participate in the group video chat in the channel at the same time!
When you turn on a video within the server, the channel will automatically limit the amount of users who can join until all of the camera streams are terminated.
As soon as there are 25 users in the channel, the remaining users on the server will notice an error that informs them that there are currently an excessive number of users in the channel.
Instructions For Joining A Server Video Chat
Step 1:Â Join a Voice Channel
After you have ensured that you have the necessary rights, the first thing you need to do to join an ongoing video conversation is to choose a voice channel that is hosted on your server!
After selecting the voice channel, a compact window will appear in the upper-right hand corner of the desktop application where you may observe the ongoing conversation.
Note: Your video is not yet being shown to everyone else in the channel at this time; however, you will soon be able to participate in the conversation by adding your voice.
Step 2: Share your video!
Simply press the Video button located in the bottom left corner (inside the Voice and Video Panel) or the Turn on Camera button located within the video call window to share your video with the rest of your friends. These buttons are located in the same area.
View Modes
Once you have joined the call, you will have the ability to select from a variety of view modes and window settings in order to customise your experience of watching the conversation.
Grid View –
This view will act as the starting point for all server video calls! This is the ideal option for viewing all of the videos that are currently being shared within your video chat at the same time.
Focus View –
You can then use this perspective to make the person you’re concentrating on the most visible on the screen by making their screen the focal point of the attention! The screen that is now being focused on will appear to be the largest screen, while the screens of everyone else will appear to be smaller screens at the bottom.
Want to make that focused view even larger?
While in the Focus View, you have the option to hide the streams of the other Server Video Members (by hitting the button labelled “Hide Members” within the stream that is currently being focused on). This will allow you to display only the main screen that you are currently concentrating on. This way, you won’t be able to become sidetracked by the screen of anyone else!
Want to change which screen you want to focus on?
You can change the screen that you are concentrating on by pressing the Show Members button, which will display all of the additional streams one more time, and then selecting the screen of the other person!
Window Modes
Pop Out View –
Pressing the button labelled “Pop Out View” will cause the video conversation to load in its entirety in a new window that may be moved independently of the other windows on your screen.
You can utilise the Remain On Top button if you want the Pop Out window to remain on top of all other windows even after you minimise or close them. Use the button labelled Remove from Top in order to unpin the window.
Full Screen View –
If you want the movie to take up as much space as possible on your screen, make sure to hit the “Full Screen” button at the end of the process.
Stream Modes – Video And Screenshare
Due to the fact that we are located directly within the server, you will also have the ability to simultaneously engage in video chatting as well as Go Live – Screenshare at the same time!
Simply proceed in the following manner:
- Under the voice status panel, at the bottom left corner, there is an icon labelled “Go Live streaming.” If you press this symbol, a new window will appear.
- Choose to share either a single application window or the entire screen by clicking the appropriate option.
- When you are ready to share your stream with others, you can do so by clicking the “Go Live” button located at the bottom of the window.
Note: – A video call can include multiple participants, each of whom can stream their screen and go live at the same time.
Server Video Safety Best Practices
Because we care about the privacy and safety of each and every user on Discord, we want to make sure that everyone is aware of the steps they may take to ensure the safety and security of their server space.
Step 1: Check your Roles and Permissions!
You should always make sure to double-check your roles and permissions so that you can maintain control over who has access to your system. This is the first step that we recommend you do.
In order to provide the highest level of protection, you can configure the server’s permissions so that the “everyone” role has no access to any of its features. If the server is configured in this way, any individual who is unwelcome or unfriendly who joins the server will be unable to view the server in any capacity, participate in any way with the server, or interact with the server in any way unless an administrator assigns a role to that person.
Step 2: Set your Verification Level to the Highest Possible Level!Â
If you increase the degree of verification for your Discord account to its maximum, then users will be unable to link a phone number to their account until it has been validated.
Because of this, anyone who is unfriendly and tries to join the server will be prevented from doing so!
Check out the following sources for further information and advice on how to secure your server from potential threats:

- What exactly are these “Verification Levels,” then?
As always, you can get in touch with our Trust and Safety team directly at https://dis.gd/request if you have evidence of a breach to either our Terms of Service or our Community Guidelines.
