Reduced Motion Setting in Discord
The illusion of depth in Discord is created by the use of motion effects. We are aware, however, that users who are negatively impacted by excessive motion and movement within apps may experience difficulties as a result of these effects. As a result, we are going to implement Reduced Motion to assist!
What Does Reduced Motion Do?
This option is an accessibility tool that reduces the total number of animations as well as their overall intensity within Discord.
Animations And Movement That Are Limited When Reduced Motion Is Enabled:
- Messages both new and old Bar and Jump to Messages have had their slide animations eliminated, and you will now be sent straight to the message.
- Turns off the shaking animation that occurs when attempting to shut out setting pages that have changes that haven’t been saved yet.
- When scrolling down a channel list, the server banner animation is reduced in its intensity.
- Changing the behavior of the pages so that they no longer fade in and out but rather open and close immediately
- Turn off the highlight that appears on a message in the chat window while your mouse is hovering over that message.
- The Login/Authentication page’s background animations are turned off when this option is selected.
This setting prevents GIF avatars from playing in the conversation unless the user profile for that user is opened. - The tooltip animations, menu dropdown animations, and context and pop-out menu animations will now all fade in.
- The loading animation that plays when you run Discord (which shows Clyde spinning) will no longer be dynamic.
- On the Emoji Picker, as well as within chat, statuses, and replies, animated Emojis will now appear as static images.
Where Can I Find This Setting in Discord?
You may discover the setting by navigating to User Settings, clicking on the Appearance tab, and then clicking on the Accessibility option.
You currently have a choice between the following options:
- Keep in step with the computer.
- Make Reduced Motion Available
Sync With Computer(Default):
Click the “Sync with computer” button if you want Discord to automatically match the same settings that you now have on your computer. This may be done by pressing the button.
Enable Reduced Motion:
Toggle the “Enable Reduced Motion” option instead if you want to use Reduced Motion in Discord but keep the settings on your PC the same. This will just affect Discord and will not affect your other programs or settings.
Regardless of the settings you have for your system, if you enable this setting, Discord will slow down the animations and movements that occur within the application.
To turn off Reduced Motion in Discord, all you need to do is toggle the “Enable Reduced Motion” option to the off position.
Having Trouble Disabling Reduced Motion?
If you are having difficulties disabling Reduced Motion on Discord, it is most likely due to pre-configured options that have been enabled on your system. These settings can be found in your system’s settings menu.
Reduced Motion in Discord can be enabled with a single setting on Mac OS, however, there are several different options available for Windows users to choose from. In the following steps, we will walk you through where to look to verify that these settings are correct.
To examine the configuration of your system at the moment:
Enable Reduced Motion in Windows
- Display Settings
- Go to Settings > System on your Windows 10 device. Comfortable Getting There Display ⟶ Windows may be made easier to use and customized. Uncheck the box that says “Show animation in Windows.”
- Advanced System Settings
- If you are still unable to turn off Reduced Motion, you will need to go into the Advanced System Settings menu and make sure that the option to Animate controls and items inside windows is selected.
- Under this menu, you can alter the individual animations that you desire to have disabled on your system. Doing so will cause Reduced Motion to become active, but you will still have the option to disable other animations.
Note: If you have motion and animation effects disabled on your system for reasons other than accessibility, then following the procedure from the previous section should enable you to turn Reduced motion off for Discord while leaving it enabled for your system.
Enable Reduced Motion in Mac
- On a Mac, navigate to the Accessibility preferences under System Preferences. Show, and remove the checkmark from the box labeled “Reduce motion.”
Enable Reduced Motion in iOS
You may access the settings for your iOS device by going to User Settings and pressing your Avatar in the bottom right corner. Settings > Appearance > Adjustments Motion that is Much Less
