We require that all adult content posted on Discord must be placed behind a gate that restricts access according to the community guidelines. Server owners have the option to add a gate that restricts access to specific channels to those with an 18+ age restriction. Using an age-restricted server designation, it is now possible to classify entire servers as 18+ by referring to them as 18+ servers.

What Is Classified As An Age-Restricted Server?

Servers should always be classified as age-restricted if they contain a majority of content aimed mostly at adults over 18 if the majority of their content is centered around certain themes that are considered to be appropriate for adults over 18 or if the community is centered around certain themes that are considered to be appropriate for adults over 18.

The Discord server will mark these servers as age-restricted servers if they are not properly designated as age-restricted servers when they meet these criteria. By sending a system message to the server owners, we will inform them that their server has been affected and that they will be notified.

I would like to point out that server owners will soon have the option of self-designating a server as age-restricted, which is exciting news!

Are there any implications for users of age-restricted servers as a result of this?

A server that restricts access to content for users between the ages of 13 and 17 will not be able to accept new members or allow them to view content.

To gain access to the new age-restricted servers on iOS, users aged 18 and above will need to confirm their willingness to view age-restricted content on a desktop before being allowed to access these spaces.

A subset of age-restricted servers focused specifically on explicit pornographic material will also be blocked entirely on iOS, as well as a subset of other age-restricted servers. There will only be desktop and web versions of Discord that will be able to be accessed by iOS users aged 18 and above to access these dedicated pornography servers.

What About Age-Restricted Channels?

It is still necessary for all owners of Discord servers to apply age-restricted gates to channels with mature content on their servers.

In the case of a server, the presence of age-restricted channels does not automatically mean that the server as a whole should be deemed age-restricted. It is only necessary to designate the server as age-restricted if the majority of the content on the server is geared toward 18+ audiences.

Appealing An Age-Restricted Server Designation

Discord’s age-restricted server-level designation will need to be appealed by community owners if they wish to remove age-restricted server-level designations for the communities that have been identified as being age-restricted by Discord.

• During the age-restricted selection process, choose “Appeal my server’s designation”
• You need to enter the server’s details in the required fields

As a server owner, you should provide the IP address of your server along with a description of why your community should be considered safe for work (SFW). There is no one other than the server owner who can appeal on behalf of the server on a server level. The age-restricted designation will be removed from communities determined to be SFW – at which time users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to rejoin the community again.

Updating User’s Age Information

Users who indicated during the age-verification process that they were between the ages of 13 and 17 will not be able to join age-restricted servers if they indicated that they were between these ages. To update the age information of users who have mistakenly identified as between 13 and 17 and may not be 18 or older, they can write to Trust & Safety.

Requests should be submitted by using the following form: https://dis.gd/request

• Choose “Appeals, age updates, other questions” from the drop-down list
• In the subcategory “Update my age information”, choose the option “Updating my age”
• Submit the requested materials with your date of birth and enter your date of birth
