How to use Text Channels & Text Chat In Voice Channels In Discord

Voice chat, video chat, and text chat are the three modes of interaction that are available to you and your friends within the Discord platform. In this post, you will discover more about where you can engage in text-based conversation with other people.

Text Channels in Discord

Text channels, which can be identified in the channel list of a server by the symbol # (also known as the pound sign, hashtag, or octothorp! ), are the locations where the majority of text-based communications will take place.

When it comes to utilising text channels, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind, including the following:

  • When you select a channel in the panel on the left, the channel will become highlighted, and the content of the channel will be brought into the main view of the Discord client.
  • If you have authorization to modify a channel, you can do so by editing the channel by pressing on the gear wheel that is located next to the name of the text channel. You might also find a picture of a person alongside a plus sign right next to the channel name. If you click on that picture, you’ll be able to invite other people to join the channel.

  • You can send a message to the text channel by entering it in the text box located at the bottom of the client and then pressing the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • Via the use of the text box, you may also send emoticons, stickers, gifts, and animated GIFs.
  • Depending on the permissions that have been granted to you or the role(s) that you have on the server, you may be able to engage with messages that have already been sent in the text channel by adding a reaction, forming a thread, reacting directly to a message, and doing other things.

If you discover that you are unable to connect with a text channel using particular activities, it is possible that this is due to the fact that you do not have the necessary rights for that service. Permissions are covered in greater detail on this page.

Text Chat In Voice Channels in Discord

We are delighted to announce that text chat will be available in voice channels beginning on June 1, 2022.

Users are able to comment on something that is being said without interrupting the speaker, send message material using the embedded text chat of voice channels, and exchange links, memes, and other information all within the dedicated text chat that is contained within the voice channel. Because of this feature, users no longer have to switch to a different text channel while they are in a voice channel. Doing so would either cause them to miss the stream they are currently watching or cause them to become distracted from the live conversation that is taking place in the voice channel.

Where Can I Find The Text Chat In A Voice Channel?

Users are able to make use of the text chat that is linked with every voice channel, provided that either their role or the channel itself has the proper rights. You can access the text chat in a voice channel across all clients by clicking on the message bubble symbol that appears when you hover over the name of the voice channel in the server channel list or in the top-right hand corner of the voice user interface (and a swipe left gesture on mobile!).

Desktop and Browser clients

The desktop and browser clients’ text chat will open in a sidebar on the right-hand side, analogous to the experience you currently get when viewing a Thread. This will be the case for both clients.

  • After entering a voice channel, you can access the text chat associated with that channel by pushing on the message bubble located in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • You are able to read the chat messages in the text channel even if the voice channel is not connected. For instance, if you want to grab a link to the hilarious video that somebody might have posted, you can press on the message bubble icon that is located next to the voice channel name within the channel list. This will take you to the channel list. You also have the option to right-click on the name of the voice channel, then select “Open Chat” from the menu that appears.

Mobile clients

By following the instructions below on your iOS or Android smartphone, you will be able to locate the text chat that is associated with a voice channel:

  1. You will need to go to the server that has the voice channel you want to join and then tap on the name of the voice channel.
  2. The next screen that comes up will show you buttons labelled “Join Voice” and “Join Muted,” as well as an icon that looks like a speech bubble in the top right-hand corner of the voice user interface.
  3. You can access the text chat without joining the audio call by pressing the button that looks like a bubble of messages. You are able to concurrently participate in audio chat and view the text chat at the same time.

To access the text chat on your phone while you are in the voice channel, simply slide left on your phone’s screen while you are in the voice channel. This will bring the text chat into view.

Message Previews And Notifications in Discord

You will be able to see message previews in the upper right-hand corner of the voice channel if you are currently in a voice channel but the text chat that is contained within that audio channel has been closed. The previews of new messages will appear as soon as they are sent, but they will disappear after a specific amount of time or when further messages arrive (three at most and truncated after a certain number of characters).

Without having to open the actual chat window, message previews keep you abreast of the current state of play in the active message conversation that is taking place in the voice channel. To disable these previews, however, all you need to do is click the symbol with the three dots located at the top of the page, and then uncheck the box labelled “Show New Message Previews.”

Unread mentions will be indicated with a red number indicator whereas unread messages will simply be indicated with a grey number indicator while you are in the voice channel. This is one of the other ways that new messages can be indicated. Your inbox, which is located in the top right corner of the client, will also be updated if someone mentions you in a text chat they are having with you.

Where Are The Permissions For A Text Chat In A Voice Channel?

In the event that a user or role does not have the appropriate permissions for a text chat, or in the event that the text chat permissions for a voice channel are disabled, then users who are affected by either of these events will be unable to write new messages or read messages that were previously written in the text chat.

The new embedded chat in voice channel function, like many of the other tools available on Discord, has permissions that can be adjusted and managed by a server admin. These rights determine how different roles or a specific voice channel can make use of the feature.

About the authorizations required for users to participate in text chat within a voice channel, the following are the requirements:

  • Send Messages
  • Read Message History

On the following voice channels, the permissions for text chat are located in the following location:
